Social Change Through Art – Feb 9th Opening

TAKING A STAND 2016 Art Exhibit Opening!  Tuesday, February 9th – 6:30pm – 8:30pm.

“Taking A Stand,” our most recently completed program at Bulkeley Middle School in Rhinebeck, asked 8th grade ELA students to read To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee, then choose a social change issue to research and find inspiration in the actions, individuals or events they studied.  Students were finally challenged to “take a stand” on their research by creating, through art, their own personal message about the injustices they discovered.

Students created sculptures from recycled materials, collages and fabric pieces to reflect on past and current movements around a variety of social issues including civil rights, voting rights, gender equality, religion and accessibility.  Also on display will be the artists’ written statements about their research, the materials they chose to work with and their process of creation and discovery.

The artwork will be on display for the month of February in the auditorium lobby at the school.  The public is welcomed to view the show at the Feb 8th opening or during school hours throughout February.

Working with the students on this program were:  ENTA Visual artist, Mimi Graminski, ENTA facilitator, Martha Tobias, ENTA Education Director, Peter Muste and BMS 8th grade ELA teacher, Deedra Kaake.  This program is in it’s 3rd year at Bulkeley Middle School and is part of Ms. Kaake’s regular ELA curriculum.
